Introduction to ATEX certification:

In 2014, the European Union issued the new ATEX (Equipment for explosive atmospheres) directive 2014/34/EU, which was officially implemented on April 20, 2016, replacing the old directive 94/9/EC.

The 2014/34/EU Explosion proof ATEX Directive covers mining and non mining equipment. Unlike previous directives, it includes mechanical and electrical equipment, various explosion-proof electrical equipment, protection systems, safety instruments, control instruments, and regulating devices, etc., extending potential explosive hazardous environments to dust, flammable gases, flammable vapors, and mists in the air. It specifies the application technical requirements, basic requirements, safety requirements, and necessary qualification assessment procedures for equipment used in potentially explosive environments before it is placed on the European market within its scope of use.

The ATEX 2014/34/EU directive classifies equipment into three categories based on the level of protection of the installed equipment:

Category 1- Very high level of protection

Category 2- High Protection Level

Category 3- Normal level of protection

 

ATEX certification scope of application:

The ATEX certification is applicable to a wide range of equipment, including fixed offshore platforms, petrochemical plants, flour mills, and other potentially explosive environments.

The products involved in ATEX certification include electrical equipment and non electrical equipment

(1) Electrical equipment: including electronic components, devices used for generating, storing, distributing, and converting electrical energy, or control devices that convert electrical energy into energy

(2) Non electrical equipment: refers to equipment that only has mechanical motion, and these moving parts will generate ignition sources (such as hot surfaces, friction sparks, etc.). Common non electrical equipment includes gearboxes, fans, compressors, brakes, mixers, etc.
